Denisse De La Cruz Lopez joined the Boys Wrestling Team as a freshman, looking for a sport that fit. She found it but there were no other girls to practice with or compete against. So, she wrestled with the boys. Her sophomore year, she began recruiting other girls into the gym and by her senior year, there was a girls wrestling team formed. Denisse dominated her weight class in the league, then onto the Masters meet and qualifying for the State Meet. Denisse was recruited by University of Montana Missoula on a full ride scholarship where she will be on the inaugural women's wrestling team with a goal to "Be a NCAA Champion!"
Coach Nate Ybarra, said of Denisse, "Of all the wrestlers on the team, she was most dedicated, tough, persistent and had a lot of success. I am really proud of Denisse."
The Jim Seay Legacy scholarship is awarded annually to a student athlete who embodies the values of hard work and commitment that Jim Seay instilled during his 28 years as a wrestling coach and educator at Paso Robles High School. In 2017, Jim was honored by being inducted into the California Wrestling Hall of Fame. An honor he shares with his late brother, Joe Seay.
This scholarship provides financial assistance for the student athlete recipient to pursue their education at a college or trade school, allowing them to continue their athletic and academic pursuits. Each year the Head Coach chooses the student athlete who gave their maximum effort even if they were not always successful - a powerful life skill for their future!
